Paul- "It's important stuff for somebody if they have a problem with toenail fungus."
Rosemary- "A lot of people do."
Paul- "Joe, I think people are laughing at your glasses. What are you doing?"
Joe- "Yeah, well you know the glasses are a little funked out Paul but if you're using laser you need the glasses. Dr. Michael Uro is kind enough to join us this morning and talk about the procedure. And also Pat has been kind enough to act as our patient this morning. Dr. Michael, walk us through it. What is it you're doing?"
Dr. Uro-"Well, what I'm trying to do here is kill the fungus in Pat's toenail. Toenail fungus is a real common problem. 50 percent of people over 50 have this condition. And it's very embarrassing. What brings patients to this clinic is the embarrassment of the toenails. 55 percent of the patients we treat are male because most males aren't going to paint their toenails and can't hide them. So imagine trying to go to the beach or a pool party and putting on a pair of flip flops- highly, highly embarrassing."
Joe- "You know I've been there doc and I'm going to show my toes in a couple of minutes because I know Natalie and Rosemary are going crazy. Dan says "No don't do it. Don't do it!" But it's only two toes and I'm going to out my toes today, ok. I'm going to out my toes so everybody knows. And it's embarrassing and Pat's very cool about it. Pat, how are you feeling?"
Pat- "Uh, no problem. It's going fine."
Joe- "Talk about it. I know you and I have dealt with it, Pat. Is it embarrassing? Is it humiliating? Do you worry about it with the fungus and the kind of weird toes?"
Pat- "For me, it was just the toe grew so long it was a real pain to have it cut and ground down."
Joe- "OK. SO doc explain to us what you're doing with the laser procedure and what exactly that does."
Rosemary- "Does it hurt?"
Dr. Uro- "So, the laser penetrates the nail, three to four millimeters, and kills the fungus on its way through the nail. Topicals like oils and creams don't penetrate the nail because toenails are meant to keep things out. And so this laser penetrates that and kills the fungus so that over time as the nail grows out, you'll have a nice, new, normal-looking toenail."
Joe- "Ok beautiful. There you go. Rosemary, it does not hurt. Pat just said it does not hurt so we're good with that. Take a look; I've got two toes here on the end. Now doc, the two on the end there, doc, explain what going on with my toes and is there any hope? And you can show the Jim Carrey now if you want."
Dr. Uro- "Absolutely, we'll have you on a Waikiki beach in no time. Um, actually there is hope for yours. Uh, one procedure ought to take care of it for you. Occasionally, with really bad cases, the patient may require a second treatment inside of twelve months."
Joe- "Dollars and cents doc, what are we talkin'?"
Dr. Uro- "Anywhere from $750 to $1200."
Joe- "OK. There you go guys. It's worth it not to deal with the Jim Carrey. Pat's going through it. He's getting it done. I might have to consider this for my couple of nasty toes. I've outted them. There it is it's out there, baby."
Rosemary- "Joe, your medical insurance won't help you out on this?"
Joe- "No medical insurance. This is a cosmetic thing guys, kind of like the Lasik. So don't think your insurance is going to pay for it because it is not. You're going to have to pay out of pocket."
Paul- "One other question I'm just curious about, if we can go back to the doctor down there, and there's that tube right by the foot. Is that sucking away toe fumes? What's that doing?"
Joe- "It's sucking away toe fumes and it will also take Pat's toe if he gets out of control. It's going to take a toe or two with it so doc, explain what the tube is."
Dr. Uro- "Oh, the tube is a smoke evacuator. The laser creates kind of an imperceptible smoke plum which is not good for me to be breathing. So that kind of whisks that away. That's what the tube is doing."
Joe- "There we go guys, anything else?"
Paul- "No, and fascinating Joe. And good for you, not being ashamed of the toes you're the man."
Joe- "I'm out there baby."
Paul- "Yeah, the glasses are a good look. You can find Dr. Michael Uro Foot Care in Sacramento, 87 Scripps Drive. That's not far from University Village there. Give them a call. See the number on the screen, (916) 920-0371."
